Coach Andy: The Littlest Argos “They become my guys.”

Info

Coach Andy has been with coach Jason from day one when the team started as the Mustangs, a flag football team for the city of Scottsdale back in 2002.  Coach Andy and Jason became friends in college at ASU when they played on an inter-mural coed flag football team that went on to win a National title in the sport.  Ask either of them and neither could imagine that 7 years later they would be wrangling 150 boys through one of the finest youth Football clubs in the state.

Andy has something very special to offer an Argo player, and that is the perspective and experience of having been a small football player all the way through his Senior year in high school.  There are 7th grade Argos bigger than Coach Andy was as a 135 lb  Senior in High School.  That did not stop him from being a starting player though.   The challenges of being a small player are not only physical.  They can impact a player mentally and emotionally.

In 8 man leagues, the competition of youth sports is regulated in a way by weight categories so all players are facing off within relative size. This is the case for our PEE WEE, Midget and Minor league 8 man teams this year.  For the competitive 11 man Major and Senior leagues however the restrictions are based on grade levels not weight.  This is more in line with what a youth football player can expect at the high school level.  It is at this level of play in the older leagues when Andy’s experience as a smaller player becomes invaluable.

What Coach Andy offers is empathy, understanding and a level of knowledge and experience that he passes on to the players who may be outsized, but still have the drive and desire to play.  According to Coach Andy,   If you are passionate, smart and know the ins and outs of the game you can be a great football player.

In Coach Andy’s first interview he talks about being a small player, the friendly rivalry that grew into the Argos and the pride he feels contributing to the development of ARGO football players from the very beginning.
